The Two Percent Gallery Tours: Inspiring Buddy Pairs

I’ve spent the last decade at the center of the art world, uncovering the most unique and amazing works of art being produced today.

It is my pleasure to connect Family Center Buddy pairs to this super inspiring and often misunderstood world.  This isn’t just fun, it’s a spark that inspires a lifetime of new possibilities.  The most rewarding moment for me is overhearing statements at the end of the tour like “I want to be an architect/designer” or “I never knew art was this fun”.

I think there are 2 major misunderstanding about contemporary art that I aim to clear up on every tour (and quickly in this blog post).

  1. Contemporary art doesn’t make sense.

We use our eyes more than any other sense, and yet too often we second-guess our opinion in front of “fine art”.  I’m here to say that your opinion is 100% correct.   If art was made in our time (2 weeks ago), and you don’t get it or you don’t like it – that’s not because you’re wrong; it’s because the art isn’t good.   It’s my job (and pleasure) to find those shows that ARE amazing.

  1. The art world is intimidating.

Ok, this one is true.  The art world has it’s own set of etiquette and rules that are often misunderstood as “inaccessible”, “pretentious” or just plain “mean”.  In fact, the galleries are open to YOU.  You’re not expected to buy anything, or have any interest in buying anything, or even look like you have the potential to buy anything ever.  The galleries are open so that artists can share their ideas with the general public, and the gallery can raise the awareness (and therefore value) of artists they believe in.  But there is some misunderstanding.  For example, that girl who ignores you when you walk in the front door is not being mean.  She’s there to act as security and watch out for people with appointments.  If you want to know about the show, just give her a silent smile and read the printed materials in front of her.  (She’ll smile back.)

I look forward to inspiring more young people through The Family Center in years to come.
